Biography Of Phyno – Life And Music Career And Personal Life

Phyno, who is professionally known as Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike was born on the 9th of October 1986. He’s also called Phyno Fino. Phyno is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, rapper and record producer. He began his music career in 2003 as a producer. Rapping in Igbo language is his main genre. In 2014 he released his first studio Album that was entitled “No Guts No Glory”. The Album had a total of four singles, namely: Ghost Mode”, “Parcel”, “O Set” and “Man of the Year”. Phyno has had the opportunity to work with musicians like Davido, Wizkid, Flavour, Timaya, Ruggedman, Bracket, Mr Raw and J. Martins.

Life And Music Career Of Phyno

Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike(Phyno) was born in Anambra State, Nigerian but then grew up in Enugu State. As for his strange-like stage name, it was given to him by one his friends whom he attended the second school education with. The name was simply derived from an English word “phenomenal”. During his secondary school days, Phyno began to develop interest for music production. Though as a kid he had dreamed of becoming a pilot, but was the advised to be a doctor instead.

Phyno learned how to play piano and drums while attending his secondary school. Learning how to create his own rendition of all most of the recording he would listen to. In his university level, Phyno attended the Institute of Management and Technology where he studied public administration, in Enugu State, Nigeria. He had started started making profits from his music when he was at level 200 in the University. Phyno made it known that one the people he always look up to is Mr Raw. In 2010, he started rapping in 2010 and later moved to stay in Lagos State in order to further his music career.

It was in 2012 that phyno started to record his first ever album that he titled “No Guts No Glory”. In the album he featured several outstanding artist, which where: P-Square, Stormrex,Olamide, Omawumi, Efa, Timaya, Mr. Raw, Flavour N’abania, Runtown and MI, Ice Prince. The “No Guts No Glory” Album was recorded in both Nigerian Pidgin and Igbo. On 25 September 2012, he collaborated with Olamide to release another Album that was known as “Ghost Mode” it so became the album’s lead single. In 2012 and 2013, the album won consecutively at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards and the Headies Awards, under the category: Best Collabo of the year.

On 7th of December 2012, the music video for the “Ghost Mode” was released. The video production was handled and directed by Clarence Peters. It was “Sputnet Records” that went on to release the second single on the album and was titled “Man of the Year (Obago)” and it was released on 23 March 2013. At the 2012 Headies Awards, the song won for the “Best Rap Single”. On 20 August 2013, the “Man of the Year (Obago)” music video was later uploaded onto YouTube. The video was still shot and directed be Clarence Peters. Unfortunately though, the “Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation” (NBC) banned the “Man of the Year (Obago)” music video in September 2013.

Later on, on the 11th of October 2011, Phyno released then his third album single that was titled, Parcel (A BIG Nwa). As for the music video of Parcel, it was captured by Clarence Peters while the video was released on the 19th of February 2014. The album’s fourth single was “O Set” and it was released on the 4th of March 2014. The song, “O Set” was produced by WizzyPro and featured P-square as a guest appearance. The music video of “O Set” was directed by P-square’s elder brother, Jude Engees Okoye. Phyno later sang “Alobam” and it was Clarence Peters that directed the video filming.

“Alobam” was produced by Major Bangz, the name of the song is a translation of an Igbo slang for “My Guy”. Phyno later sang “Authe (Authentic)” with flavour and the music video was released on 2 September 2014. Then he went on to release “Yayo” on 7 October 2014 and was produced by Major Bangz. The song made a massive hit and recognition that it stood at number 8 on the Pulse Music Video charts list. The video of “Yayo” was later premiered on the 5th of January 2015 and was directed by Clarence Peters
Opeoluwani Akintayo who works for The Daily Times of Nigeria rated the music video by giving it 8 out stars of 10. He commended its use of props.

Phyno then later collaborated with Olamide to release another album on the 1st of April 2015 that was titled “2 Kings”. Prior to the releasing day, both Olamide and Phyno made the announcement about their plans of releasing the Album via their social media handles.

In June 2013, Phyno had a show and performed in Owerri. His performance lasted for 25 minutes. Along with him on the tour were, Kay Switch, D’banj, Chidinma, Burna Boy, Vector, Sean Tizzle, Seyi Shay, Pucado, and Show Dem Camp. Phyno was also opportuned once again to perform at Star Music Trek tour 2014 edition that was held in Nsukka, Enugu State.

Phyno started a festival in November 2015 in which he titled it Phynofest. The festival was held at “Chuba Ikpeazu stadium” located in Onitsha, Anambra State. The festival had a huge attendance of 12,000 people in total. In 2016 the following year, he set up another edition of the festival but this time it was been held in Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium in Enugu State, it was important that he had his festival there too, since it was the city that he had started his music career years back. The festival had a total of over 30k people in attendance.

Alongside him in the festival, he had important artist, such as Olamide, P-Square, Mr Eazi, Onyeka Owenu, Lil Kesh, Burnaboy, M.I, Patoranking, Kcee and Zoro.

In November 2017, Phyno decided to bring back the Phynofest and made it the biggest concert ever in Africa. The festival was again held at the “Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium”, Enugu State and had in attendance a total of over 50,000 persons. He performed alongside star artist like D’banj, Timaya, Runtown, Yemi Alade, Zoro, Flavour, Ycee, Duncan Mighty, Lil Kesh and Mayorkun.

In March 2019, Phyno made an announcement concerning his forthcoming third studio album that was titled “Deal With It”. The album was supported by two singles: “The Bag” and “Agu”. Deal with it had some guest appearances such as Davido, Olamide, Don Jazzy, Falz, Zoro, Teni and Runtown.

Personal Life

In an interview he had with punch newspaper in 2014, Phyno had denied the reports which claimed that he got a woman named Rita Edmond, pregnant.
