Burna Boy – Biography, Life And Education, Music Career And Personal Life

Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu also known as Burna Boy as his stage name was born in 2 July 1991. He’s a Nigerian songwriter, singer and a rapper. Burna buy has grown to be one of the most talented and successful artist is Africa.

Burna boy became popular in 2012 after he released “Like to Party” hit song in his L.I.F.E album. In 2017, he signed a record deal with “Bad Habit/Atlantic Records” in the US and “Warner Music Group internationally”. He was the winner of the best international act in at the 2019 BET Awards, and also became Apple Music Up Next artist. Burna boy’s fourth album is called “African Giant” and was released in the month of July 2019.

At the all African music awards, the album won for the album of the year 2019. At the 62nd annual Grammy awards, the “African Giant” album was nominated for the best world music album. At the VGMA’s 2020, burna boy was awarded the African Artist of the year. In 2020 At the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, His “Twice as Tall” album was also nominated in the same category which makes him the first artist in Nigeria to be nominated twice in a roll. In 2012 at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, “African Giant” won for the Best World Music Album.

Early Life And Education

Damini Ogulu ( Burna Boy )was born in South South region of Nigeria, Port Harcourt. His father was manager in a welding company while his mother’s occupation was a translator. His GrandDad Benson Idonije was once a manger to the late Fela Kuti. Interestingly, burna boy started learning how to make his own beats from using FruityLoops. He studied in a secondary school in Corona Secondary School, Agbara in Ogun State. He later moved to London to further his studies London. Next, he was now studying Media Technology in University of Sussex.

Music Career

After his 2011 “Burn Indentity” mixtape, Burna Boy released his L.I.F.E studio album on August 12, 2013. On the first day of his album release it sold a total of 40,000 copies in a day! The album came along with five singles, namely: “Always Love You”, “Run My Race”, “Tonight”, “Yawa Day” and “Like To Party”.

The L.I.F.E album was produced by Leriq and featured popular artist like 2 Baba, Olamide, Wizkid, M.I, Timaya and Reminisce. Nigeria Entertainment Today, the album is ranked on the 10th list of 2013 Best Music Albums. The album is inspired by music legends such as King Sunny Ade, Fela Kuti and Bob Marley. The album and it’s music received positive reviews and was thus nominated at the 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards for Best Album of the Year. As of August 2013, L.I.F.E stood at number seven on the list of top “Billboard Reggae Albums chart”.

Burna Boy moved out from Aristokrat records in 2014 where he was signed into. 8 months later in February 2015, he decided to establish his own record label known as “Spaceship Entertainment”. On 25th November 2015, under Spaceship Entertainment” he released another album. In September 2016, burna boy released a 7-track supported album “Redemption” with a lead single being “Pree Me”.

Burna released another album on 26th January 2018 called “Outside”. The album was a fusion of dancehall, reggae, Afrobeats and road rap. Burna Boy featured some international vocals such as Mabel, J Hus and Lily Allen. A total of six singles were made from “Outside” album, namely: “Koni Baje”, “Streets of Africa”, “Rock Your Body”, “Ye”, “Sekkle Down” and “Heaven’s Gate”. The album was produced by Leriq, Jae 5, Baba Stiltz, Chopstix, Juls, FTSE, Phantom, Fred Gibson and Steel Banglez.

The album was ranked by “Nigerian Entertainment Today” and “Pulse Nigerian” as the best music album of 2018. At the 2018 Entertainment awards, “Outside” won for the best Album of the year. The album stood at number 3 in February 2013 on Billboard’s Reggae Albums chart. While the album earned several recognition, “Ye” became the biggest song for the year, 2018.

Burna Boy was announced on 9 October 2018 as the new Afro Hub Takeover Artist by Spotify. While YouTube for 3 months named him the “YouTube” artist on the rise.

Along with Mr Eazi, Burna boy performed at the “Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival” 2019 January 3rd, 2019. At the “sound city MVP awards” Burna Boy won a total of four awards, including “Listener’s Choice”, “African Artiste of the Year”, and “Best Male MVP”.

Burna Boy released another collaborative album with DJDS on 21st of March 2019, supported with 4 tracks called “Steel & Copper”. The album blends well with Burna Boy’s “upbeat melodies” and DJDS’ “slinky trap beats”. The Steel & Copper album is a combination reggae music with Afropop and trap.

Burna boy was the first afrobeat artist to have sold out the Wembley Arena( now known as SSE Arena) in November 2019. For this special achievement, he was given a special plague.

It was on the 26th of July 2019 that Burna Boy released his fourth music album titled “African Giant”. The album came along with six singles, namely: “On the Low”, “Dangote” “Gbona”, Killin Dem”, “Anybody” and “Pull Up”. He began recording them in 2019.

In 2021 Burna Boy got featured in “Jerusalema” remix. A song by Master KG, a South African producer. The remix gained a lot of audience and places on music charts.

In July 30th 2020, Burna Boy got featured “My Oasis”, sang by Sam Smith. As for his fifth album “Twice as tall”, it was released on 14 August 2020. Produced by Bose Ogulu(Burna Boy’s mom) and Diddy. African Giant became his highest-charting album on Billboard World Albums Charts.

Twice as Tall was later nominated on 24 November 2020 in the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, under the category of “World Music Album”. It the second time in a row that he had been nominated for that particular category. In the world album category, Burna Boy won an Edison award for his African Giant album. On December 9, Burna Boy beats Roddy Ricch, Drake, Megan Thee Stallion and Lil Baby to win for the Best International Act at the MOBO Awards.

Personal Life

Asked of 2018 Burna Boy was dating Stefflon Don but rumors. Burna Boy is a huge fan of Manchester United, he was present and also took part when Manchester launched their new kit in in September 2020.
