Falz Biography – Early Life, Education And Career

Falz, known as his stage name but professionally known as Folarin Falana was born on the 27th of October 1990. Falz is a Nigerian songwriter, rapper and actor. He started his career early in 2009 while he was still attending his secondary school Education. At that time, he also formed a music group with his friends known as “The School Boys”. Falz rose to prominence after he released a song titled “Marry Me”. The song featured guest vocals from Yemi Alade and Poe.

Currently, Falz has his own music record label that is called “Bahd Guys” Records. In 2014 he released his first studio album entitled “Wazup Guy”. The following year being 2015, he then released his second studio album titled “Stories That Touch”. As for the third album, it was titled “27” and it was released in 2017. In 2019 he then released his fourth album called “Moral Instruction”.

Early life

Falz was given to birth to in Mushin local government area, Lagos State. Falz parents Funmi and Femi Falana are both lawyers and human right activists. In 2012 after he had graduated from the Nigeria Law School in Abuja, he was called to the bar.


Falz attended and finished his primary and secondary school education in ikeja, Lagos State and osun state respectively ( that is, primary Education in ikeja and secondary education in osun state) St. Leo’s Catholic Primary School and Ikeja aOlashore International School located in Osun State. He happens to be an alumnus of University of Reading England. There he then graduated with an LLB honors degree in Law.


Falz’s music career started off as a hobby whilen he was still in secondary school. He later took it more serious and then created a music group known as “The School Boys”. In 2009, he decided to make a compilation some of his records he had done and put it in form of a mixtape and was titled “Shakara: The Mixtape”.

Falz later in 2011, released another single he titled “Wahz Up Guy”, and went on to release few others as well, like “Currency” and “High Class”. Those songs made him to gain more recognition in the Nigerian music industry.

Several Album Release : Wazzup Guy, Chemistry EP and Stories That Touch(2014–2016)

Falz was later listed in tooXclusive’s “Artistes To Watch” in 2014 list on January 2, 2014. His first album that was title “Wazup Guy” was released on 30 May 2014. The album was co-produced bybTin Tin, Studio Magic, Spellz and DJ Woske. The Wazzup Guy album had a total of 18 tracks while featuring guest artist like Show Dem Camp, Olamide, Yemi Alade and Phenom. Among the 18 tracks includes: Toyin Tomato, See Me, Right Now, The Advice, Senator, Jessica, Oh God, Marry Me, High Class and Cool Parry.

On 31st January, 2015, Falz released another of his official single that was entitled ‘Ello Bae’. The single was his first solo that won him many awards after he had released the What’s up Guy album.

Falz was nominated in 2015 at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards for his hit single “Marry Me”, under the category, “Best Collaboration of The Year”. Aside that, falz was also nominated under the category, “Best New Act to Watch” and “Best Rap Act of The Year”.

It was on the 31st of January 2015 that falz released a single entitled “Ello Bae”. That song won him a nomination in the Headies Awards under the category: “Best Street Hop Artiste of The Year”.

Then on 3 November 2015, he made an announcement about the release of his second music album called “Stories That Touch”. The album was later released on the 17th of November 2015.

Aside music, falz turns out to be a great actor too. Infact in 2016, at the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, he won for the “Best Actor in a Comedy Movie/Series”, under his acting role as Segun in Jenifa’s Diary TV series by Funke Akindele. Falz was voted and announced as the winner in June 2016 at the BET Awards, under the category; “Viewer’s Choice Best New International Act”.

On the 27th of 2016, Falz had a collaboration with Simi to release the “Chemistry”, a studio album that was supported with seven tracks and was produced by Sess. Prior to this project, Falz also worked with Simi on hit singles “Soldier” and “Jamb Question”.

Falz’s 27 and acting career (2017–Present)

Falz released a music album on the the 27th of October 2017, and he titled it “27” to celebrate his 27th birthday. 27 was a surprise album since there was no promotion prior to it being released. The album had 17 tracks which includes hit singles such as Wehdone sir”, “Something light” and “Bhad Baddo Baddest”. The album featured guest artist like Ycee, Olamide, Davido, Wande Coal, Burna Boy, Sir Dauda, Maleek Berry, Terry Apala and Medikal. Most part of the album was produced by Sess as while some tracks were produced by Studio magic and Maleek Berry. The “27” album made a huge success and gained many nominations and awards.

Falz released “This is Nigeria” music video in May 2018. The music was greatly Inspired by “This is America” which was sang by Childish Gambino. The music is a highlight of issues in Nigeria which includes bribery and corruption.

Few months after the release of the song, it was then banned by the National Broadcasting Commission(NBC) who faulted it as being a vulgar song. When being asked, falz could not understand why the song was banned on the grounds of vulgar, while the song was really not vulgar. Falz later sued the NBC for 100 Million Naira.

On September 1, 2018 at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, Falz won under the category; “Best Supporting Actor” for his acting role as Quam in “New Money”, a movie by Tope Oshin Ogun. Falz became the first Nigerian musician/artist to win twice the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.

Later in the month of August 2020, Falz announced “House21TV” to be his film production company. He made the announcement via his Instagram account. Adding to the announcement, falz also unveiled a new comedy series called “Therapy”, which was to be aired on YouTube.


As for his style of music, Falz described as “Wahzup music”. Which is a blend of comic lyrics with hip-hops in a faux Yoruba accent.
