Naira Marley Biography – Education, Music Career, Record Labels And Controversies

Azeez Adeshina Fashola also popularly known as Naira Marley was born 10 May, 1991. Naira Marley is a Nigerian-British singer and songwriter. Naira Marley is popularly known as the president of popular fan base known as “Marlians”.

Education

After being born in Agege, Lagos State, Nigeri. He relocated to Peckham in South London, England at a the age of 11. Naira Marley first attended his secondary School in the UK at Walworth School and achieved his GCSE (General Certificate Of Secondary Education). Prior to Walworth, he had studied at Porlock Hall.

Later on he decided to further his studied at Peckham Academy and graduated which he achieved a distinction in Business. He continued studying ahead and then went on to enroll in Crossways college (now, “the Christ the King Sixth Form College”) where he studied business law.

Music Career

Naira Marley was having plans of becoming an MC while growing up, and also a voice over artist. In the year 2014 after he had discovered that he had passion for music and his close friends also encourage him to pursue a music career , Naira Marley started singing. In 2015, he released “Gotta Dance”( But before that, he had made a track that was assisted by Max Twigz titled “Marry Juana”).

Naira marley released “Issa Goal” which he featured Lil Kesh and Olamide in December 2017. It was shortly before the world cup that the song was released and it became the 2018 FIFA world cup theme song for the Super Eagles. The remix of “Issa Goal” was later released in June 2018. The song featured several more artist, the likes of, Simi, Falz, Olamide, Lil Kesh and Slimcase.

The “Issa Goal” song trended more in 2018 during the 2018 FIFA world cup. It was an inspiring song for Nigerians since the were opportuned to participate in the FIFA world cup and were able to win some matches. Naira Marley uses both Nigerian Pidgin, Yoruba And English in his music when he sings. Naira marley’s music is a fusion of hip-hop and Afrobeats. His stage is name derived from the popular late Jamaican raggae singer Bob Marley, whom he admires; Naira marley dreadlocks are also a reflection of Bob Marley.

On May 3rd, 2019 Naira Marley released “Am I A Yahoo Boy” track. This track was also assisted by Zlatan (Nigerian musician). He was later arrested by the EFCC for fraud charges. Naira Marley was released from prison on 27 June 2019. Shortly when he was released, he then released “Soapy”. He won an award at the 2020 “Soundcity MVP Awards” in 11 January 2020, under the category: “Viewers’ Choice”.

Naira Marley released his second album on 18 December 2019 titled “Lord Of Lamba”. The album was a blend of Afrobeats and hip-hop and was assisted by 6 tracks. The “Lord Of Lamba” album featured some artists like Young John, Mayorkun and CBlvck and was produced was by Studio Magic, Killertunes and Rexxie.

Marlian Records

Naira Marley announced his official launching of his record label “Marlian Records” in 30 December 2019 at the Marlian Fest”, that he held in Eko Hotels and Suites. Adding to the announcement of his record label he also announced his new signed acts to be Zinoleesky, CBlvck , Fabian Blu and MohBad.

It was on 10 July 2020 that Naira Marley signed another artist to his record label. He officially made this known via a post on his Instagram handle, the name of the new artist he signed was “Emo Grae”. The new artist then released a new single which he featured Buju, titled in 0903.

The 2021 album “GTTB” ( God’s Timing Is The Best)

Naira Marley made another great announcement on 21 June 2021 via his Instagram handle that he will be releasing another album again. Marley said that he tagged that album as “God’s Timing Is The Best”. And that he was only going to release it after he had dropped the video for his official track “COMING”.

His Controversies

Arrested By The EFCC

Naira marley was arrested on the 10th of May, 2019. The reason for the arrest was based on fraud charges (also popularly known as Yahoo Yahoo by Nigerians). So he was confronted and arrested by the “Economic and Financial Crimes Commission” (EFCC). Naira Marley was also arrested along with friends of his, namely: Adewunmi Moses, Micheal “Taqueesh” Adenuga, Zlatan, Abubakar Musa and Tiamiu Kayode. It was after the release of his music video of “Am i a Yahoo Boy?” that he got arrested. His friends that were arrested alongside him were released three days later but they kept Naira Marley in their custody because of the overwhelming evidence they found with him.

Naira Marley was charged to court in May 2019 with 11 counts of fraud by the Economic And Financial Crimes Commission( EFCC ). However, he pleaded “not guilty” when he appeared before the Federal High Court. On 30th May 2019 he then had his bail hearing. On the 14th of June 2019, Naira Marley was granted bail for the sum of two million naira. While he was still in prison, Naira Marley released a single track called “4 Nights In Ekohtiebo”. In the music he talks more about his friends in the Industry and others who admired him.

Naira Marley returned to the Federal High Court in October 2019 to face the charges leveled up against him. But after an EFCC witness then testified against him, his case was then adjourned to 27 February 2020. Up still today his case is still being adjourned. In November 2021, EFCC announced that his case had been adjourned to 2022.

Disobeying Lockdown Order

After he went against the covid 19 lockdown order by was imposed by the Lagos State governor, Naira Marley was arrested by the Nigerian Police Force. In 13 June 2020, he again broke the covid 19 lockdown protocol by performing in a concert in Abuja. For this he was arraigned in court, in Abuja the FCT Administration before a mobile court in Abuja over the concert.

Valentine’s Concert In Cameroun

The Valentine’s Concert In Cameroon by Naira Marley was reportedly cancelled by the Cameroon authorities on Saturday 13 February 2021. Based on findings, the concert was twice postpone but later cancelled due to jealous between the Cameroonians entertainers who where jealousy about the influence Nigerian music and musicians had in their country.
