Timaya’s Biography – Early Life, Education And Music Career

Inetimi Timaya Odon also popularly known as Timaya is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. Timaya was born on August 15, 1980). He is from Odi, in Bayelsa state. He owns a record label called DM Records Limited. His music Career began in 2005 when he sang “Dem Mama”. The song later appeares under his 2006. His second album was released in 2008 titled “Gift and Grace”.

Timaya gained more visibility nationally and internationally after he released his third album “De Rebirth”. The album was in partnership with Black Body Entertainment, with “Plantain Boy” being it’s lead single. The album came out very successful commercially. He was able to make enough money from it and was able to collaborate with “Dem Mama Soldiers” for his “Long Life N Prosperity” music album. Timaya released another album in titled “Upgrade” along with hit singles such “Sexy Ladies, “Malonogede” and “Bum Bum”. His music has earned him many nominations and awards and four Headies award, A Nigeria Music Award, NEA Award and 2 AFRIMMA Awards.

Early Life

Timaya (Inetimi Timaya Odon) was born and grew up in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. He is the youngest of 15 children. His Dad was a banker while his mother was a trader. Timaya attended a nusery school in Port Harcourt known as Assemblies of God Nursery And Primary School. He also attended his secondary school in Port Harcourt, in Nkpolu Oroworukwo to be precise. While in school he used to break the house rules on order to attend late-night music events.

Before he could finish his secondary school Education, Timaya’s mother made him travel to Lagos to go stay with his elder sister and brother in Lagos State, Nigeria where he later graduated from the Ikeja Grammar school, Lagos.

After his Secondary school Education in Lagos State, Timaya moved back to Port Harcourt where he studied Banking and Finance in the University. But he later dropped out due to poor performance in his examinations after the first semester.

Timaya then decided move back to Lagos and joined Eedris Abdulkareem’s hiphop group while working for him as a backup vocalist. He left the group three years later in order to focus on his music career. He started recording music collaborations with fellow upcoming artists. He later met with music producer Obaksolo who produced “Dem Mama”, and it happens to be his first major hit record.

About his “Pomporo” track, he had worked Namse Udosen (A.k.a Menthol X). The pomporo track appeared in his first music album, “True Story”.

In an interview in August 2013, Timaya mentioned that his song “Dem mama” was not just a song but it was a description of what had happened in 1999, about the destruction of Odi in Niger Delta which was a river side community, at the time militants where hunted by soldiers because of allegedly killing eight policemen. As a result, it wasn’t just militants that where affected but other residents too. villages were burnt down and may people lost their lives. He added that years later he had won street credibility for his boldness after tackling the issue.

Timaya Music Career

After the “Dem Mama” song had a huge success, Timaya chose to keep K-solo as his producer. Timaya then decided to add, and was then released in 2007. In that same year, Timaya started working on his second album. Along him working on the album was Akeem D Beat, Obaksolo, Jeggs, Spankie, Terry G and Phyno. By 2008 he had finished working on the album and then titled it “Gift and Grace”.

With all the successful hits he has made, Timaya was able to win two outstanding awards in 2008, namely: “Best Reggae/Dancehall album”( he won it at the Headies Awards 2008 under the category : “Best Collaboration” for “Gift and Grace”. He also won under the same category at the 2009 edition of The Headies over “Good or Bad(O Wey)”, a song that he had featured “J martins” and then “Album of the Year” which he won at the Nigeria Music Awards 2008).

After of releasing his second album, Timaya’s “De Rebirth album came dropping. His lead single was “Plantain Boy” which gained a lot of audience. The production of the album was handled by eight talented producers, namely: Phyno, Flux, Jesse Jagz, Jay Sleek, N.D, Obaksolo, Akeem D Beat and M-Yire. Timaya also had a collaboration with M.I, 2 Baba, Konga, TJ 2Solo, Allenian, Wrecoba, Lanre, M.I and TJ.

Timaya appeared in 2010 on “Kokoroko” song, sang by a female gospel artist “Kefee”. The song was such a hit that it won in the 2010 Headies Awards under the category: “Best Collaboration”. Timaya later featured in one of Kcee’s song ”Erima”.

It was on the month of November 2011 that Timaya released his Long Life And Prosperity music album (LLNP) the album was a collaboration work with one of his crew, “Dem Mama Soldiers”. The second track of the album titled “Dem No Like Me”, the album featured one of the most successful Reggae singers “Ras Kimono”. As for his album titled “upgrade”, it came along with a total of 14 tracks. The album was released on the 25th of June 2012. The album had several hits like: “Sexy Ladies”, “Bum Bum”, and “Malonogede”.

Timaya also collaborated with Terry G, Attitude and Vector on the album. Timaya later has a duo with Duncan Mighty on “I Know I Know Dat”. The song was later leaked in the internet after some hours. Timaya and Duncan Mighty were later honoured at the 4th annual Odudu Music Awards. Those who were also honoured alongside them where Timi Dakolo, M-Trill, Becky, Sodi Cookey and Enyioma.

Timaya released his fifth music album in 2014, and was titled Epiphany. The album’s tracks numbered 20 in total. The album also had some hits, like “Sanko”, “Ukwu” and the remix of “Bum Bum” which featured Sean Paul, 2baba, Olamide, Patoranking, Phyno, Sir Shina Peters, Deethi and Terry G.

5 years later after he of released several singles, Timaya released another album in 2019 known as “Chulo Vibes”. On this album, Timaya collaborated with Burna Boy from Nigeria, Alikiba from East Africa, This project featured collaborations from East African artist Alikiba and Machel Montano from Trinidadian.
